Redefining what clubs look like for a New Generation

← back to ClubHub

Today’s younger patrons are seeking more than just a drink, they’re looking for social, participatory experiences that feels active, inclusive, and sharable.

Clubs have traditionally featured functional, conservative designs, with layouts focused more on operations than guest experiences. To stay relevant and attract the next generation of patrons, clubs must evolve. By creating an experience-led environment, venues can draw younger audiences, keep visitors engaged for longer, foster positive social connections, and inspire guests to share their experiences, subsequently amplifying the club’s reach and attracting new visitors.

How can we design spaces that strategically integrate these experiences into the fabric of a venue to attract a younger demographic by transforming a passive drinking space into a social playground, while also extending dwell time, encouraging repeat visitation, and increasing spend per head?

ACTIVE SPORTS
Active Sports are activities that guests can easily enjoy in a club setting, such as darts, shuffleboards, golf simulators, and E-sport stations. The inclusion of active sports is redefining what a club can look like for the next generation of club patrons. The narrative shifts from the traditional static, beer-led, masculine club to an inclusive, vibrant, multi-sensory experience where everyone participates.

Clubs are competing with numerous other modern hospitality venues, so incorporating active sports can help level the playing field (pardon the pun). Environments that feel energetic, social, and authentic appeal to both existing patrons and a new younger audience.

The redesign of Sale Sporting Legends, by BSPN Architecture, will create a more dynamic and memorable experience for guests. Central to this is a new sports bar that encourages social play, featuring a dedicated darts zone, shuffleboards, and private booths with E-sports.

SPATIAL ZONING AND FLOW
Experience-led environments encourage movement, interaction and participation. Open and transparent spatial planning allows energy to flow naturally, setting a lively, social tone and signalling that the venue is a place to engage, not just observe.

A variety of seating options, from booths and high-tops to leaners and stools, creates flexibility, supports different group sizes, and invites guests to gather, socialise, and stay longer.

Circulation is equally critical. Seamless connection between the bar, food service, and activity zone keeps patrons moving, interacting, and exploring, ultimately driving spend and dwell time.

Thoughtful zoning and flow don’t just organise space; they shape behaviour, build atmosphere, and activate the venue.

At Shellp Beach Club, BSPN’s design ensures seamless circulation, allowing patrons to move effortlessly through the club’s new spaces. The transformation features an upgraded bistro, a new sports bar, modern function areas, a vibrant new cafe, and an inviting outdoor dining terrace.

FLEXIBILITY
To maximise value, Active Sports zones should be modular and adaptable.

Having the ability to reconfigure the space to accommodate different activities and purposes, such as live music, trivia nights, or private events, allows clubs to stay vibrant and relevant throughout the day and week. Ensuring equipment (such as nets, tables, or simulators) can retract or reconfigure to accommodate changes in use, while mobile furniture and lightweight partitions allow venues to shift between daytime cafe, evening play space, and late-night bar seamlessly.

This will create a dynamic and socially engaging environment and allow the potential for every square metre to become revenue-generating while remaining adaptable for multiple uses across the week.

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION
When thoughtfully integrated, technology can elevate both atmosphere and usability, enhancing the experience without compromising a club’s character or warmth.

At Arana Leagues Club, BSPN worked closely with the client to design a sports bar that seamlessly balances innovation with inviting design. A striking nine-metre multi-format LED screen creates an immersive viewing experience. The design also incorporated dedicated dart zones with digital scoring and leaderboards to gamify the environment and encourage social connection and participation.

MATERIALITY AND MOOD
The interior should create a welcoming, dynamic, and vibrant atmosphere that encourages participation and activity.

Material and colour play a crucial role in shaping the atmosphere and influencing how people feel and behave. Natural materials like wood and stone soften the environment, making it warm and approachable, while bold colours energise the space, signalling fun and excitement. Metal and polished surfaces add a modern, dynamic edge, encoraging movement and activity.

Lighting is equally important: focused illumination on activity zones combined with warm ambient lighting elsewhere creates visual rhythm, hierarchy, and a sense of flow throughout the venue.

A standout example of using materials and lighting to activate a space in the Kempsey Macleay RSL Club, currently undergoing an exciting transformation by BSPN Architecture. The new sports bar combines timber and stone with striking metal overhead features, creating a dynamic, modern backdrop. Vibrant pops of red in the dedicated darts zone bring energy to the space and naturally draw guests in, encouraging interaction and engagement.

Kempsey Macleay RSL is an example of a cohesive environment that feels energetic, modern, and social -aligned with the mindset of younger patrons.
